1st Team Match Report
Coventry City Girls 3 - 1 Knowle Ladies
League 13/11/11
This week we host Knowle Ladies in virtually perfect playing conditions for the second time this season. Both teams make a sprightly start with Knowle gaining the early advantage and taking the lead from a headed corner which evades the sun-blinded Kerry and left to our vertically challenged defender to try and clear off the line (Unlucky Kels). With a lift from the early goal Knowle step up the tempo only to be matched with a composed Coventry team who after a saved penalty and several attempts at goal, inevitably level the score line just before half time.
In the second half once again both teams show a great deal of determination but Coventry begin to look the more comfortable of the two teams, having greater possession and most opportunities which sees them pull away and seal the game with two further goals.
A competitive and entertaining game with Knowle having brought a tremendous sense of purpose but matched by a display of confidence and character from our team of ladies, which over the last few weeks have seen seasoned, new and young players come together and become worthy league leaders.
Coventry City Girls 4 - 0 Fairfield Villa
League 9/10/11
This week we were back at Wolston to face Fairfield Villa in a game which started with Coventry first out of the blocks and immediately attacking Fairfield’s goal space, but swiftly Fairfield responded forcing Coventry to scramble back and defend a strike which hit the post. Shannon opens Coventry’s account minutes from coming off the bench and not to be out done Rachel adds to it when she finds herself in acres of open space on the left with only the keeper to beat.
In the second half Sam squeezes the ball under the keeper as she scores from the spot after being brought down in the box, and to cap off the scoring; Roxy also enters the frame from the bench to smash one past the keepers clutches.
Coventry earned the score line which doesn’t do Fairfield’s performance justice and once again Coventry could have added several more missed opportunities. Muddy’s aerial prowess in helping to keep a clean sheet deserves a mention and possibly a couple of Anadin. A crowded midfield encouraged smarter passing which kicked off many of the positive attacks. On occasions Coventry could be accused of some ponderous clearances and play where the acronym KISS (keep it simple stupid) could be adopted.
Well done all.
Knowle Ladies 0 - 2 Coventry City Girls
League 2/10/11
This week we are just up the road to in-form Knowle Ladies to try and blow away last weeks disappointment. With the sun beating down, the temperature was always going to have an influence on both teams performance as Knowle get the first half under way. Coventry’s efforts are soon rewarded as a race to the ball sees Shannon get enough on it to break it away from the clutches of Knowle’s keeper and introduce it to the net. In the second half, Gemma’s persistence to find the back of the net also pays off when she smashes the top left hand corner, giving Coventry breathing space.
In all an improved performance whereby Coventry dominated the majority of the game, in particular the second half, with many opportunities created but missed and a defiant defence. On occasions Coventry threatened with their flowing one touch passing but a hard uneven surface seemed to make ball control difficult.
Coventry City Girls 0 - 1 Coventry Sphinx
League 25/9/11
The eagerly awaited fixture of the two Coventry teams had finally arrived with this being only the 2nd league game in four weeks for Cov Dev. The face off began with sphinx kicking off and immediately putting themselves in the driving seat netting a moment of indecision and a mis-clearance in front of Cov Dev goal mouth. As expected both teams continued at a frantic pace, inviting sloppy passing and a disjointed formation developed, destroying any chance of crisp passing, skillful and free flowing football. With both teams desperate for the next goal, several opportunities came with Sphinx having the best chances but being denied by Kerry who pulled off some terrific saves.
As a conclusion, the friction of the local derby may have been bigger than the match itself but the difference appeared to be down to desire, of which Sphinx seemed to show more in the earlier stages of the game. Cov Dev can take some consolation from the fact that the winning and only goal was somewhat of a gift
