Under 10 Match Reports 2009/10
Coundon Court 0 - 2 Coventry City Girls
28/11/09 - League
Today we travelled away! To face our local rivals Coundon Court, in the big derby match. With both teams equal on points in the league, and Coventry just one place above them, but with a game in hand and just ahead on goal difference. The Girls’ needed to be on form.
Coventry were soon off the mark, when Bailey Wiggett drilled a hard low shot (for the second week in a row) underneath the Coundon keeper, gifting City an early lead after six minutes played. Today we gave Captain Fantastic! Megan Fellows a new role, Megan had an outstanding game, even earning praise from the Coundon management. Well-done Meg!
Wingbacks Sunnie Steele & Maisie Ferris were also given more opportunities and the pair worked harder than normal, up and down the pitch. Well done girls! City midfielders Grace Tebbutt & Grace O’Shea also worked hard and had a lot more chances today. They both worked well, linking with Sunnie & Maisie. Also pushing forward to support Bailey. Well done both!
It was end-to-end action and Coventry were unlucky not to increase their advantage, with shots saved and even hitting the post and cross bar. City keeper Abbie Smith made a couple of important saves and a catch, ensuring she went into the break with a clean sheet. Well-done Abbie!
Half Time: Coundon Court 0 v Coventry City Girls 1
The second half starts and the Coventry girls soon win possession, and worked the ball into the Coundon half. Then following a tugged shirt, just outside the Coundon box, City were awarded a free kick. Up steps Grace Tebbutt who saw her cross land at the feet of Sunnie who pushed the ball through for Grace O’Shea to score a well-deserved goal, doubling Coventry’s’ advantage with five minutes played. After weeks of nearly and almost, your hard work has paid off! Well-done Titch!
The girls all worked hard for the remainder of the game, which again was end-to-end action. It would be fair to say that all of the Coventry girls had the chance to extend City’s lead but the Coundon keeper was on form and made some good saves, denying the Coventry girls a bigger advantage.
During the last five minutes City made a double substitution bringing on fresh legs. Finlay Ross came on up front for the tiring Bailey; Abigail Turrell came on to give Sunnie a rest, this gave the subs some time on the pitch, taking part in this important win against Coundon.
Well-done girls! A fantastic result, for ALL of your hard work.

Coventry City Girls 3 - 4 Stratford Town
21/11/09 - Open Cup
Today we were up against Stratford Town in the Open Cup. Coventry made an excellent start, with Grace O’Shea making an impressive solo run along the right wing, before crossing the ball to Grace Tebbutt who hammered home, giving City an early lead with five minutes played.
The City Girls then seemed to dominate and kept good possession, but they lacked the killer finish. City then peppered the Stratford goal, even hitting the keeper twice! Who saved the ball without realising!
The City defence, Sunnie Steele, Megan Fellows and Maisie Ferris all worked hard again, to give stand in keeper Abigail Turrell a comfortable first half, resulting with a clean sheet for Abigail. Megan made a fantastic goal line clearance to deny the visitors a goal.
Just before the break Bailey Wiggett made a fabulous goal, ‘following in’ to score after a first shot rebound. Taking Coventry into the break with a 2-0 lead.
Half Time: Coventry City Girls 2 v Stratford Town 0
After the break Stratford came out all guns blazing! And they did to us what we have been asking the girls to do each week. Stratford caught the Coventry girls unawares and managed to score in the first minute played. Only two minutes later, more confusion at the back enabled Stratford to equalise, making this a tasty cup-tie.
Coventry then worked the ball up to Bailey who drilled in a fine hard & low shot, once again giving City the lead, after nine minutes played. The City girls then made hard work for each other, with lack of communication and both Grace’s now working even harder, by pushing back to assist the defenders Finlay Ross, Megan and Sunnie. When the girls eventually managed to get the ball up to Bailey, who was always surrounded by 3 or 4 players, with little or no options.
With nine minutes remaining Stratford made a break through and managed to once again score the important equaliser. Now with extra time looming, we tried to encourage the girls to score the winning goal that they deserved. Once again City peppered the Stratford goal, and Stratford made some strong counter attacks making it an exciting cup clash.
But today wasn’t the girls day and with only seven minutes remaining, Stratford were awarded a penalty, following a tackle by Megan, who appeared to have touched the ball before the Stratford player went to ground inside the City box. The spot kick was then fired in taking Stratford into the lead for the first time in the game. Coventry simply ran out of time, and you could clearly tell that the girls were upset with their second half performance.
Hard luck girls! We can take the positives out of this game, to prepare for the upcoming tough league games.

Warwick Junior Angels 0 - 7 Coventry City Girls
14/11/09 - League
Following a few weeks without a game and a good session on the pitch at Wolston the girls travelled away today to face Warwick Juniors Angels. A match played in difficult conditions with the wind and rain playing their part! With only two places separating the teams, we knew the girls must up their game today.
Coventry were fast out of the blocks, and Megan Fellows made a fine run from the city half, to deliver the ball into the path of Bailey Wiggett, who duly fired in the first after just four minutes of play. The girls are growing in confidence week by week and look comfortable in their positions. The ball was then worked from the back and Megan made a fine pass to Grace Tebbutt, who fired a great long range shot into the top right hand corner of the net, with fifteen minutes played. Four minutes later Bailey burst down the left side of the pitch on a solo run, Bailey then dazzled us with some of her fancy footwork before firing in Coventry’s third.
In the last couple of minutes of the first half, City were awarded a spot kick, up stepped Grace Tebbutt only to see her effort saved by the Angel’s keeper. Taking us into the break with a 3-0 lead.
Half Time: Warwick Juniors Angels 0 v Coventry City Girls 3
Soon after the break Grace made up for her earlier penalty miss, to score City’s fourth with five minutes played. A minute later, Megan, following a great solo run somehow managed to squeeze the ball past the Angel’s keeper with an acute angle. The City defence Sunnie Steele, Abigail Turrell and Finlay Ross along with Skipper Megan all worked extremely hard making it difficult for Warwick to attack the City keeper Abbie Smith, who made a number of fantastic saves when called upon when needed. Grace O’Shea worked her socks off again linking well with Grace & Bailey.
With about ten minutes remaining Abbie Smith hurt her wrist, after another fine save. Stand in keeper Abigail Turrell then took up position between the posts. Bailey then finished off the day by scoring twice, with one from a cross from Megan and the other a fine pass from Grace. In the final minute of the game Warwick were awarded a penalty, resulting with the Warwick striker pushing her spot kick wide of the right post, giving us another game with a clean sheet for both defence & keepers!
Well done girls, another great performance, played in difficult conditions.

Sporting Club Albion 9 - 0 Coventry City Girls
17/10/09 - League
Today City travelled away to face an older, more experienced squad, Sporting Club Albion. Who we know have been enjoying a goal-fest, scoring 41 goals in just two games! Today was always going to be a tough match for the girls.
Sporting Club Albion were quick off the mark, catching the Coventry girls still taking their positions, Albion had three unmarked players queuing in the box to score in the first minute of the game. Straight from the Coventry kick off, Albion stole the ball back and fired in a fine long-range shot, from outside the City box, in the second minute played.
The City Girls’ then made a few attacks into the oppositions half, but The Baggies seemed to be playing with an extra player and looked comfortable on the ball and passed the ball around the less experienced, younger Coventry squad. Following some confusion at the back, and a fumble by City keeper Abbie Smith saw an Albion player tap in from close range in the 10th minute.
Once again after a Coventry attacking move, Albion won the ball back, and were quick to get into the Coventry half and managed to score again in the 18th minute.
Just before the break, The Baggies were awarded a corner kick, following the well placed cross an Albion played volleyed in the ‘goal of the game’ in the last minute of play in the first half.
Half Time: Sporting Club Albion 5 v Coventry City Girls 0
Whistle blows, play commences, City kick off, Albion manage to steal the ball back and score once again in the first minute of play, catching the Coventry girls’ unawares.
The City strike force, Grace Tebbutt, Grace O’Shea (Titch!) and Bailey Wigget made a number of attacks and tested the Baggies keeper a few times, but were unlucky not to be rewarded with at least one goal for their hard work.
Coventry defenders Maisie Ferris, Megan Fellows, Sunnie Steele and Abigail Turrell were often out numbered as the Albion players flooded the Coventry box, but they never gave up, working hard until the final whistle.
Unlucky City keeper Abbie Smith made some fine saves, only to see Albion players ‘following in’ to score goals 7 & 8. Abbie then made a fine double save only to see yet another Baggies player waiting to follow in to score their 9th.
Hard luck today girls, well done for your hard work and not giving up, when the going gets tough.

Coventry City Girls 10 - 0 Redditch Borough
10/10/09 - League
Carry On ……………..Scoring!
Today City were fielding a bare bones 7 squad, with Titch away on holiday, and Finlay Ross still injured, (get well soon Finlay!) The U/10’s continued their fine form today with an impressive win against Redditch Boro’. The Heading should read ‘The Grace & Bailey Show!’
The Girls’ were instructed to get on with the job today and they did just that. Early on Grace Tebbutt made a strong run down the right side, brushing aside the opposition before crossing the ball into the path of Bailey Wiggett who finished well, taking the Sky Blues into the lead.
Instantly from the Boro’ kick off the girls’ looked hungry for more goals and after a couple of minutes Grace went off on a fine solo run, darting between the opposition before firing a great shot past the Boro’ keeper.
The Coventry defence, skipper Megan Fellows, Maisie Ferris and Sunnie Steele all worked extremely hard and played an important role to ensure City keeper Abbie Smith kept her first clean sheet. Well done girls!
Soon after Abigail Turrell sent a neat pass through for Grace to fire in a perfect long range shot from outside the Boro’ box. The girls then ‘worked’ the ball from the back up to Abigail who once again sent a through ball to Grace who burst through the middle of the pitch and fired home her 3rd of the game. Well done on your hat-trick Grace!
Near the end of the first half Coventry were awarded a throw in, Grace made another fine ‘long throw’ and following a goal mouth scramble, Bailey tapped in her 2nd of the game, taking the Sky Blues into the break with a 5-0 lead.
Half Time: Coventry City Girls 5 v Redditch 0
Soon after the break the girls’ continued to dominate and after a couple of minutes Grace made another fantastic solo run and blasted in yet another great long range shot, with the Boro’ keeper having no chance of saving a perfectly placed shot which was probably goal of the game.
Once again from the Boro’ kick off the girls’ won back the ball and Abigail made another fine pass, for Bailey to fire in her 3rd of the game. Well done on your hat-trick Bailey. Only 1 minute later, Bailey managed to steal the ball back from a goal kick and slotted home for her 4th of the game.
With 10 minutes played a Boro’ player made a CRUNCHING tackle on the Cov Skipper, which resulted with Megan leaving the field for a breather. Now composed and not wanting to stay off, Megan decided to battle on for the remaining 10 minutes.
Shortly after Grace fired a ‘hand stinging’ shot, which the Boro’ keeper made a great save, only to see Grace following in to tap into the net.
Into the last minutes following a Coventry throw, we were amazed by some fancy footwork by Bailey, (which earns praise from the Boro’ Management). Maisie popped up in the box to earn one for the backs! Resulting in Maisies’ Dad galloping down the touchline with arms aloft!
Well Done Girls on an outstanding performance.
